Background
Why did you start training?
I was approached by a judge who thought I would make a good fitness
competitor, so I trained for my local show and I ended up here.
How long have you been training? 5yrs and competing 4 yrs
Where do you currently train? At fitness 2000 in Birkenhead this was our gym until we sold it to our manager Lars Heindenrich.
For
our British readers your husband Mike is Warrior from Gladiators (the
British and better version, haha), Do you train alone, with Mike or
with someone else?
Most of the time I train on my own
but I have my routine given to me by Mike, Mike trains with me
sometimes and I train with the guys in the gym, that’s if I need
spotting on heavy days. I am like one of the guys, when it comes
to training.
Contest history?
Amateur North west fitness 1 st, British finals fitness 1 st, Universe fitness 4 th EFBB North west fitness 1 st, EFBB British finals 1 st (turned pro) Professional Fitness: 2003 NOC 16 th, Hungarian 9 th, Jan Tana, 20 th
2004 Hungarian fitness 6 th through injury had rest of season off 2005 changed to figure competed in the Arnold 11 th, San Francisco 15th Training split? Back and triceps, shoulder biceps, legs, chest calves and abs Favourite body part to train? Back
Back Best body part? Abs and Butt
Are there any weaknesses with your body parts that you would like to improve for future competitions?
Oh yes I need to improve on shoulders because I don’t have long
clavicles. I do have the advantage of a tiny waist, 22inches, so
bigger shoulders will help with the symmetry, and my back is the next
part I need to improve on, to give me a better v-taper. One good thing
I can do is to get in good condition.
Who did you look up to when you first began training?
I used to look up to Suzy Curry as she was pretty much the same build
as me but I am a little taller. I knew that I could build on my
small frame like she did.
And is there anyone present that you look up to? I have people who inspire me; they are all different for different reasons: -
My husband Mike who gets me prepared for every show, he is also the one
who gets more stressed, haha. Then there is my son who helps me with
the housework when I’m away as he is 11 now. - I look up to Jenny
and Monica as they both are what I look for in appearance and stage
presence. How they present themselves on stage is very graceful. - Elaine
Goodlad - who is older than myself and she is competing and looking
fantastic, I hope I am still competing at her age as she is so
gorgeous. - Jen Hendershott - who has been great to me
before I turned pro with routines and it was her advice about a certain
routine that earned me my pro card in fitness. - Finally my family, who are very supportive of me, and help me in every way possible.
How are you perceived in the gym/public? Do guys/girls freak out when they see a good looking blonde who lifts weights and has abs?
I get mixed feelings from people until they meet me and get to know me
and then they change their views. Ladies love my abs and it
inspires them to train harder. The guys, well I banter
(joke) with them, and I feel more at ease training with them rather
than the girls. When I go out at night, I get men wanting to see
if my biceps are as big as theirs etc, and the girls, well girls will
be girls if you know what I mean. Best Quality? I am a friendly person; I like to make people laugh
Hobbies? Very artistic, I make wedding invites and things like that. Fears: I don’t like heights too much,
Competition Scene
Favourite diet food? WHAT! Is there one?? I don’t have a favourite diet food. I eat the same foods for weeks on end. Favourite cheat food? I love to eat Chinese food. What condiments are in your fridge?
At the moment not a great deal, I don’t use sauces etc, because I am
not a very good cook, actually I can’t cook and I burn things. What's in your fridge that should not be there?
I am very good at the moment everything in my fridge is “good for you”
(British healthy meals). So I am pretty boring at the moment. Favorite Fitness competitor? That would be Jen Hendershott she is a great friend and was my inspiration when I started out in fitness, Favorite figure Competitor? With figure being so new and competing in it for the 1 st
time, I found a lot of the girls lovely, but I would say that my
favorites would be Elaine Goodlad as she is so beautiful and is an
inspiration. Also Monica and Jenny Lynne are also great
girls. Favorite bodybuilder? Our friend Ernie Taylor, he is a lovely man and I have known him for a long time, and he is our top English Pro. What competition music have you performed to?
Lots because my music has lots of mixers in them, Limp biscuit,
Brittany Spears, can’t think there are so many, my recent was “Popeye
the sailor man” where I did a routine dressed like Popeye. And how long do you prepare before a show to bring together a fitness routine? It could be up to 3 months because I don’t have any dance or gymnastics background therefore I need more preparation time. Have you ever faced any dilemma’s running up to show, with your routine? And do you get assisted with them?
Yes I always had dilemmas up to a show because not being a gymnast and
dancer it was always harder for me to get it precise. On other
occasions, I fell a lot through training and busted my ankle badly.
I then had a gymnast coach and a dance teacher to assist me with
my routines, without them I couldn’t have done some of the things that
I did when performing on the stage. You
recently competed at the Arnold figure, which was your first Pro Figure
competition. For the readers that aren’t aware, you are taking a year
off fitness to give your ankles a rest. How was the experience at? The
expo? Great I was on the CNP stand with Dorian Yates, I signed loads of
pictures and my face was tired after doing so many pictures with
people. I made lots of contacts with photographers and other
people in the industry. The expo is so big and keeps getting
bigger, it was nice to be apart of it. Meeting other figure/fitness girls? ’I
knew Jen Hendershott, Tanji, Julie, Carla and Kelly as I have competed
with these girls before when I was competing in fitness. I was really
excited to meet Monica as she is one of the girls that I have followed
for a long time through fitness and figure. Then there is Jenny Lynne,
who is leading the way in figure, both of them are so beautiful and
kind. I also got to meet Elaine who is so tall and
gorgeous. The rest of the girls was my first time in meeting them
and they were all so kind, and it was nice to see everyone helping
everyone backstage, thanks Girls Being on stage in front of a huge audience? Brilliant, I loved it, it was a great experience as they usually are look forward to my next competition. You finished an impressive 11th at the Arnold, well done for that, and a week later you then competed at the SF pro. Yes I placed 15 th
out of 24 so I was really pleased because I am a “new girl” on the
block, in between the two shows I traveled to Vegas were I did a photo
shoot with Terry Goodlad How well did the photo shoot go? Where about in Vegas was it?
The photo shoots went great and I enjoyed it so much, I went to Terry
Goodlad’s house to do the shoot and both Elaine and Terry looked
after us well. Did your preparation change at this show compared to the previous show?
Not really I tend to keep my diet the same, From the Arnold to the San
Fran there wasn’t a great deal to change. But from changing from
fitness to figure I had to change my training as they are looking for
another look and shape. A lot of Figure ladies have been
confused over this “look and shape”, has it been clear to you, what the
judges are looking for?, did other figure girls mention this before or
after the show? No it hasn’t been clear what they are looking
for. I think they will change there mind every show and who they
like at the time. The look I was told was broad shoulders, tiny
waist, defined abs and good legs but not striated, which is what I came
in looking at. I think a lot of the other girls just do what they
think they like and hope for the best. Do you think there is an inconsistency with the judges marks over “this shape and look”? Yes
because the top 5 girls could all be very different in the look and
shape there isn’t a look that you could follow as it changes every time Out of the two shows, was there a favourite? The Arnold - you couldn’t get a better show to do for your 1 st figure show, the San Fran was also another good show. Did you make any friends at the competitions? Are there any special mentions or thank you to anyone? Yes I made a few friends, all the girls were so nice but I do have a few thank you’s. Thanks
to Jenny Lynne who saved my butt because when I flew into the Arnold, I
missed the Competitors meeting. So I missed out on all the running for
the show, so I only took 1 costume for the pre judging. As I was
rushing I left my two-piece behind and Jenny had a spare which fitted
perfect Thanks Jenny. Also to Elaine Goodlad for her
hospitality and great make up skills, this was when I went to Vegas for
a photo shoot with Terry, Thanks Elaine. Also to all the girls
who competed as everyone will help you and share stuff with you if you
need it. Thanks Girls Since training for some years, you have obviously seen the changes in your appearance but has your personality changed at all? No I am still clumsy and say stupid things. No, nothing has changed. Your
look is very feminine and pleasing and you have a healthy, natural look
to you. How do you feel about fitness/figure women using enhancement
drugs to help create their physiques? I think if that is what
they think will help them along, then that is up to them. I
personally feel that the feminine look could be lost by going down that
root and that again is a personal preference. Is there any advice for new comers to the sport? Yes,
acquire a good trainer to make sure you go in the right direction of
what you want to achieve, be positive and be consistent in your
training. Don’t go into the sport thinking this will be easy as
it is such a selfish sport, so you will need good backing support. Being
on stage for that one day has taken a lot of preparation to get there.
I know a lot of girls who think that it looks so glamorous when they
see my pictures of the final part, and think that this is for them but
there is a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to that stage.
All you can do is try it, some like it and some never do it again. What are you plans for the rest of 2005 and onwards? This year I have 3 more figure shows to do and next year who knows Trivia
Favorite Movie: Any rocky film and I love Pretty Woman Favorite Book: Shopaholic’s books, really funny Favorite Music: I like a lot of different music from Shania Twain to soft rock depends really - Singer? I like Celine Dion/Shania Twain - Band? I don’t have a favorite Ideal Holiday? Somewhere warm, I love Vegas and Florida, or I would like to go to somewhere like Antigua Well I would like to thank you for your time, it has been a great pleasure and I wish you more success with your Pro life.
